I realize that Naples has much to offer and is a fascinating place, but having been to the airport and train station there, I will not be stopping there this time. The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been, and other than taking a boat, the only way to reach this area is the local Circumvesuviana train, which departs from Naples and arrives in Sorrento. This train makes 30 stops and is packed wall to wall with mostly local Napolitanos. It is a pickpocket’s delight for any tourists that are brave enough to take the ride. Believe me, it was one of the few places in Italy where I did not feel safe. Rick Steves even warns of this in his books and videos about this area.
If I needed another reason not to return, the streets of Naples are still littered with trash, which has been a problem for several years. No thanks, I’ll take a pass this trip.
