News from Italy

It seems like Italy is desperate to find ways to make money. Now they are fining dog owners in Molise if their dogs bark between certain hours. Molise is the region where my paternal grandparents were born, although not this town where the canine law has been established.

Check this out from La Gazzetta del | Barking Molise dogs face fines and have shorter leashes. I like the photo in the article of the dog wearing a helmet and sunglasses!

  1. That is so ridiculous that it infuriates me. I just wrote a comment on the paper’s website about that.

  2. David Savoca says:

Maybe the legislators don’t care, but how would they enforce such a law? Is it reasonable to expect a dog not to bark between 1pm and 4pm?. What happens if the dog barks at a cat between those hours, is the cat owner liable? Or is there an exception for barking at a burglar? Maybe they don’t have tort law in Italy… I feel sorry for the police and the magistrates who are burdened with such frivolity. Wait a year, and win a local election on a “repeal the silly barking law” ticket…
