News in Italy

I saw this news story about Juliet’s balcony in Verona and knew it would just be a matter of time. Tourists are getting out of hand and the city officials want to be proactive in protecting this Unesco World Heritage site. Verona clamps down on tourists at Juliet’s balcony.

When I went there last May the courtyard was packed with tourists as usual. I understand Verona wanting to take action to preserve this popular attraction in this beautiful city.

  1. I haven’t had the privilege of visiting Verona, can completely understand why they want to discourage tourists from leaving their messy and possibly destructive love notes.

It will be difficult to discourage those who are determined to leave their mark behind. Sadly, many monuments have been ruined thru the years by such vandals.

Peasants should not be allowed to travel. Then these wonderful “keepsakes” from days gone by will be preserved for the future. It is very irritating to see people who do not appreciate the arts nor history do damage to the things that transcend time. It does make me happy to realize that time will have the last laugh on the graffiti artists.

It’s such a shame that a few vandals can spoil it for the rest of us. 😦

It is a fiction of course, that this is Juliet’s balcony. People do strange things.
