I thought I would write about Italy and specifically mention some of the topics making news there. A few of these will definitely affect sightseeing agendas and travel plans especially in Rome.
It is no secret that Italy’s economy is not doing well, to say the least, and when their ancient monuments need to be restored the Italian government has reached out to the private sector for help.
In August the Trevi Fountain had to be drained for repairs and it was recently announced that the Italian fashion giant, Fendi, will be sponsoring the €2.5 million restoration which will begin in March and last through the year, or even longer if on the Italian time schedule.
The largest and most expensive restoration is at the Colosseum and the Italian shoe company, Tod’s is paying €25 million. That project will take several years and already there have been ongoing delays. Nothing happens quickly in Rome.
The Rialto Bridge is another landmark in need of repairs and Diesel, the Italian clothing company famous for jeans is ponying up €4 million for this project.
Visitors to these sites will have to take photos with scaffolding and construction equipment around these landmarks but it is what it is. I wouldn’t let that stop me from a trip to my favorite place – ITALIA!
